Climber Jokull Bergmann (named that at birth despite the fact that it translates to Glacier Rock Man) had an ice climbing accident years ago that put him in the hospital for 6 months - 14 broken bones including 3 vertebrae, an ice axe through the leg, lost 3 pints of blood. Today, he is Iceland's only certified mountain guide. I tagged along and photographed him and the others for his website as he guided 4 clients as we made a first ascent of the North Ridge of Holarnhjukur (1300m). A beautiful mountain in an amazing valley (called Skidadalur - translates to Ski Valley) where Jokull used to herd sheep as a kid, the round trip from his grandfather's farmhouse (now a guesthouse) took 10 hours and 1 package of whale jerky. |
