FISHING ON HA LONG BAY

Chasing first light through the mist with a fleet of rowers who move like ghosts.

We left the harbour at four in the morning, long before the tour boats churned the water into froth. The guide had promised fog, and fog was exactly what I wanted — that thick, milky light that turns a thousand tourist junks into a single, timeless silhouette.

For the first hour there was nothing to shoot. Just grey on grey, the karsts hinted at rather than seen, the only sound the drip of oars and the creak of old wood. I kept my hands warm on a thermos of tea and waited. Photography in a place like this is ninety percent patience and ten percent nerve.

The best travel frames are never taken. They're waited for, in the dark, until the world decides to show you something.

— Marc Pagani

Then the fog thinned — not lifted, just thinned, the way a curtain moves in a draught — and for maybe ninety seconds the rowers slid into a shaft of soft light with the cliffs stacked behind them like stage flats. I made eleven frames. This is the one where nobody moved, where the water was glass, where the whole bay seemed to hold its breath with me.

By the time the sun was properly up the magic was gone, replaced by heat and engines and the ordinary business of the day. But that ninety seconds is why I travel with a camera. You can't plan it. You can only be there, ready, when it happens.
